Motorola ROKR E8 released

The Motorola ROKR E8 has just been released and is free on all pay monthly contracts from Orange.

The Motorola ROKR E8 is a much needed return to form for Motorola after seemingly not producing a decent, stand out mobile phone since the original v3 Razr. The E8 is a dedicated music phone with cutting-edge, easy-to-use controls that allow a smooth transition from phone to MP3 player to imaging device. Motorola’s breakthrough ModeShift technology presents you with the only the controls you need, at the time you need them, instantly transforming from music player to phone to imaging device with the touch of a button. Simply move your thumb across the FastScroll navigation wheel.

The face of the ROKR E8 is a sleek, seamless panel that features the first haptic touch pad from Motorola, which provides vibrating, tactile feedback when you touch the virtual buttons. It’s light too, just 100g and 10.6mm thin. Primarily a music phone, the device lets you load songs from multiple sources and is compatible with standard connectors, software and accessories.

There’s 2GB of memory, which can be expanded to 4GB using a microSD card. The ROKR E8 also has a built-in FM radio, a standard 3.5mm headphone jack, a 2 megapixel camera and a full HTML web browser.

Apple iPhone 3G release less than 1 month away!

Since Apple officially announced the new 3G iPhone last week various online publications have been trying to get one up on each other by speculating on how much it costs to make one, how many will sell etc. What we do know is the Apple iPhone will be launched in 20 countries (including the UK) on July 11 which is less that a month away!.

Despite being more expensive that us Brits are used to paying for a mobile phone, the original iPhone sold 6 million units before it completely sold out. The new iPhone 3G promises to be more affordable. It will be available in 8GB or 16GB form and there will be a special edition white version available.

The iPhone 3G has the same 3.5 inch touchscreen. It has tapered edges and a glossy plastic back. The headphone jack is now flush to the phone and sound quality has been improved.

With built-in GPS the iPhone 3G integrates with Google Maps to provide live tracking. Browsing the web will be much faster thanks to 3G. Apple claim that browsing on the iPhone 3G is 36% faster than on the Nokia N95.

The iPhone 3G also has improved battery life. It will provide 300 hours standby, or 5 hours of 3G talk time, or 5 hours of web browsing, or 24 hours of audio playback.

Available now on O2, the Sony Ericsson C902 Cyber-shot phone has sleek looks and a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, xenon flash and face detection. It’s also a 3G phone with HSDPA mobile broadband. It has an FM radio, a very good music player and 160MB of onboard memory,

The phone’s lighting dramatically signals when you are in camera mode by switching from white to blue and Sony Ericsson has placed shortcuts to the most helpful camera shortcuts around the screen of the phone. These touch sensitive icons quickly enable you to select the function you need, such as turning on the flash or switching to macro mode for close-up shots.

HTC Diamond to be released this month in different guises!

The HTC Diamond is expected this month has now been released on Orange contracts here and will also be known as the MDA Compact IV on T-Mobile.

This version of the HTC Touch Diamond is slightly different to the o2 XDA Diamond and HTC Touch Diamond as it has nicely rounded edges and it weighs less - only 98g compared to the 110g of the other two models.

Apart from this and a few minor cosmetic changes, all three devices are near identical.

The T-Mobile Compact IV is a slim touchscreen phone powered by the highly customisable Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system. It has a clever TouchFLO 3D system, in T-Mobile’s white and magenta colour scheme, that allows your photos and music to be searched as you rotate the phone, or via finger gestures on it’s impressive screen.

The screen itself is a 2.8 inch TFT-LCD with full VGA resolution meaning you have plenty of room to view pictures from the onboard 3.2 megapixel camera, or movies stored on the 4GB internal memory. Browsing the web on this phone is great too as the large touchscreen is complimented by broadband like speed thanks to the HSDPA and Wi-fi data connectivity.

Built in GPS completes the impressive feature list and with all this packed into a such a good looking fashion phone, T-Mobile are sure to have a best seller. As soon as the first deals for this hot smartphone appear we will post them here…

Samsung u900 Soul released

The Samsung U900 Soul is the ultimate handset from the Ultra Edition range. It blends design and technology, creating a fashionable phone that’s also well-featured.

It’s a stunning-looking sliderphone, encased in its tough metallic casing the pictures you see online don’t really do it justice. It’s technologically advanced too. The 5 megapixel camera has features such as face detection, image stabiliser and Wide Dynamic Range. There’s also a secondary camera for making 3G video calls.

The icons on the touch-sensitive navigation panel change intuitively according to the functions you’re using. This makes it very easy to select items from the phone’s menu. The Samsung Soul has 3G and HSDPA for high speed downloads and web access. There’s a built-in FM radio and an MP3 music player that boasts a digital power amp designed by Bang and Olufsen.

New Samsung F490 out now on Vodafone

FREE on a 12 month contract, £35 line rental with 500 minutes and 250 texts per month.

The Samsung F490 has a 3.2 inch touchscreen display and a slim profile. More advanced than the Samsung Armani and more practical than the Samsung F700, the new F490 is a fantastic package. With its glossy surface and rounded edges the F490 looks expensive.

The large 16:9 touchscreen display provides haptic feedback so every touch is accompanied by a small vibration to your finger. The user interface is a breeze. With several software upgrades it’s now even more intuitive than the Armani or the F700.

Beneath the display are three touch-sensitive keys; a home key for returning to the main on-screen menu, a green key for answering calls and a red key for ending a call. Above the main screen is a video call camera. 3G video calls are possible and the F490 also has HSDPA for high speed downloads and reliable video streaming. On the right side of the F490 you’ll find a shortcut button to activate camera mode and on the left side is a volume control. There’s also a standard 3.5mm stereo jack for plugging in your favourite headphones.

The Samsung F490 has a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and standard LED flash. The image quality is very good but the video record capabilities are not as good as those offered by the LG Viewty, which is probably the F490’s main competitor. The F490 also has a built-in web browser, plenty of organiser applications, a good music player and full screen java games.

New Motorola RAZR2 V8 and V9 released now

Motorola RAZRR2 V8The Motorola RAZR2 is the proper successor to the best selling RAZR V3 as unlike the V3i and V3x, which were minor updates in truth, the RAZR2 is a true next-generation RAZR phone.

The RAZR2 comes in 2 slightly different versions - the V8 comes with 420MB of internal memory while the V9 has only 45MB but has the addition of a microSD memory card slot.

The RAZR2 v8 has the following features:

  • Ultra-slim
  • 3G - only on V9
  • HSDPA (3.5G) - only on V9
  • Quad-band (Works in USA)
  • Bluetooth
  • Video Record
  • MP3 Player
  • 2 Megapixel camera

Looks wise the RAZR2 has the usual metallic finish, 2 inch exterior display and inside there is a new keypad with a large 2.2 inch (240×320 pixel resolution) display.

The main area of weakness on this ‘next generation’ RAZR2 phone is the camera - it is only 2 megapixels and doesn’t have auto-focus :(

If you loved the original Motorola RAZR v3 phone then you will like this updated version even more!

Mobile Networks - do you care who you are with?

UK Mobile Phone networksThis interesting article over at tech.co.uk about the decreasing role of the mobile phone networks in the new mobile world that has Google and Apple at the business end of the table has got me thinking about what the future holds for the UK Mobile operators.

With mobile networks giving us the option of as many anytime, any network minutes and texts for a set amount per month do you really care which mobile network you are with anymore?

A few years ago 3 had a hard time getting anyone on their network due to the poor network coverage but these days I rarely hear of people complaining of poor network coverage, even on 3!

The web savvy users of this and other mobile phone sites seem to only care about the cheapest deal that allows them to get the handset they want, with the right amount of inclusive minutes and texts every month that allows them to budget X amount per month and never overspend.

I know I and other mercenary mobile phone users like me have no real loyalty to any one network anymore. For example I have no amazing allegiance to o2’s web portal or Vodafone’s live service as I go to www.google.co.uk on my unlocked windows mobile smartphone whenever I am out about town and couldn’t tell you what unique services either provide currently. I remember my wife had a 3 mobile for a while that allowed her to see how many mintues and texts she had remaining on the home screen - this looked handy but I never get near my oodles of inclusive minutes / texts allowance so wouldn’t be that interested in this feature really.

In fact the only time I ever overspend is if I have been too lazy to find an internet cafe to use Skype to phone home whilst abroad! However these days you don’t even need an internet cafe as your smartphone can use a decent wifi connection to make calls using it’s inbuilt wifi and skype configuration :)

Over the last few years I have been contracted to Orange, Virgin, O2 and Vodafone purely because a particular deal was available that my then network wouldn’t match due to my miserly monthly spend and surely I am not alone?

With Google, Skype and others like Yahoo providing network indepedent must have mobile applications are the networks likely to simply turn into any other commodity despite their massive advertising budgets?
