Mobile Broadband now compared at Mobile Checker

mobile broadband usb stickDo you know your USB dongle from your USB data stick? Have you seen the adverts for something called “mobile broadband” but not understood what it’s all about?

Well mobile checker have added the following page to make the comparison of mobile broadband packages a whole lot easier:

Compare over 130 different mobile broadband deals available in the UK

We are planning to add the following explanations to the deals pages too but for now read on for everything mobile broadband related….

USB Stick, USB Dongle or Data Card?

Well, the most popular method of getting mobile broadband currently is the usb stick which is like a USB data (memory) stick in terms of size and ‘plug and play’ functionality and these are available on each of the following networks in slightly different designs which can be seen here:

3’s USB Stick, Orange’s USB Stick, Vodafone’s USB Stick and T-mobile’s USB Stick

A USB dongle is the older method of getting online where the dongle is the name of a slightly larger, plastic device with a lead trailing from it - it does exactly the same job as the usb stick but it’s a little bulkier.

The oldest mobile broadband devices are the data cards which, unlike the other 2 USB options, fit in the PMCIA slot of a laptop (note these will not work with a desktop PC!) - they are the size of several credit cards stacked together.

What if I don’t want to have to buy a new USB stick?

Well, what a lot of the current broadband literature and advertising doesn’t tell you is that you can use ANY 3G mobile phone connected either via bluetooth or a usb cable to surf the internet at broaband like speed. Yes, this is a little more cumbersome but you save the cost of the usb stick / dongle / data card and you will probably have your phone with you anyway wherever you are wanting to surf using mobile broadband!

For those of you that want to get the highest possible speeds using a mobile phone rather than a standalone USB device then look for a 3G device that has the newer and faster HSDPA technology (nicknamed 3.5G) connectivity.

Is mobile broadband really like the broadband I can get in my house?

The speeds you will get using USB style mobile broadband will vary based on the same factors that affect your current mobile phone - signal strength. If you are using these devices in a strong 3G signal area then you will likely not notice much difference in terms of speed compared to an existing home broadband connection. However if the 3G signal that your new USB mobile broadband connection you are planning to use is weak you will invariabally notice some speed issues.

Where you will likely notice a difference between standard home broadband and mobile broadband is download limits - there are restrictions that the networks place on the amount of web pages / files you can download for the price you are paying each month. The typical allowed usage is 3GB which should easily be enough for 95% of people that use the web to browse sites and download the odd music tracks etc but if you are planning to use mobile broadband as a permenent replacement for your home connection (losing your landline at the same time to cut bill costs maybe?) we would advise you to get the largest amount of bandwidth you can each month.

Want to know more?

Leave the Mobile Checker staff a comment at the end of this post and we will answer questions / queries here and if we get enough interest put together some help guides :)

Apple iPhone 3G release less than 1 month away!

Since Apple officially announced the new 3G iPhone last week various online publications have been trying to get one up on each other by speculating on how much it costs to make one, how many will sell etc. What we do know is the Apple iPhone will be launched in 20 countries (including the UK) on July 11 which is less that a month away!.

Despite being more expensive that us Brits are used to paying for a mobile phone, the original iPhone sold 6 million units before it completely sold out. The new iPhone 3G promises to be more affordable. It will be available in 8GB or 16GB form and there will be a special edition white version available.

The iPhone 3G has the same 3.5 inch touchscreen. It has tapered edges and a glossy plastic back. The headphone jack is now flush to the phone and sound quality has been improved.

With built-in GPS the iPhone 3G integrates with Google Maps to provide live tracking. Browsing the web will be much faster thanks to 3G. Apple claim that browsing on the iPhone 3G is 36% faster than on the Nokia N95.

The iPhone 3G also has improved battery life. It will provide 300 hours standby, or 5 hours of 3G talk time, or 5 hours of web browsing, or 24 hours of audio playback.

Sony Ericsson C902 released

Available now on O2, the Sony Ericsson C902 Cyber-shot phone has sleek looks and a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, xenon flash and face detection. It’s also a 3G phone with HSDPA mobile broadband. It has an FM radio, a very good music player and 160MB of onboard memory,

The Sony Ericsson C902 lacks GPS and the outdoor durability of the similar C702, but it offers much better camera functions. It has a unique lens cover that slides open to reveal the 5.0 megapixel camera lens. The phone’s lighting dramatically signals when you are in camera mode by switching from white to blue and Sony Ericsson has placed shortcuts to the most helpful camera shortcuts around the screen of the phone. These touch sensitive icons quickly enable you to select the function you need, such as turning on the flash or switching to macro mode for close-up shots.

HTC Diamond to be released this month in different guises!

The HTC Diamond is expected this month has now been released on Orange contracts here and will also be known as the MDA Compact IV on T-Mobile.

This version of the HTC Touch Diamond is slightly different to the o2 XDA Diamond and HTC Touch Diamond as it has nicely rounded edges and it weighs less - only 98g compared to the 110g of the other two models.

Apart from this and a few minor cosmetic changes, all three devices are near identical.

The T-Mobile Compact IV is a slim touchscreen phone powered by the highly customisable Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system. It has a clever TouchFLO 3D system, in T-Mobile’s white and magenta colour scheme, that allows your photos and music to be searched as you rotate the phone, or via finger gestures on it’s impressive screen.

The screen itself is a 2.8 inch TFT-LCD with full VGA resolution meaning you have plenty of room to view pictures from the onboard 3.2 megapixel camera, or movies stored on the 4GB internal memory. Browsing the web on this phone is great too as the large touchscreen is complimented by broadband like speed thanks to the HSDPA and Wi-fi data connectivity.

Built in GPS completes the impressive feature list and with all this packed into a such a good looking fashion phone, T-Mobile are sure to have a best seller. As soon as the first deals for this hot smartphone appear we will post them here…
